Surveying the European Mayors

I am the coordinator of the Italian team.
The Mayors III project focuses on the elected mayors in almost 30 European countries.
Data on gender, party affiliation, local institutions' functioning, local policy priorities, governance networks, and mayoral influence, among many others, will be collected through an international survey addressed to the mayoral local political elite.

The project is conducted by the LocGov Research Network, a European network, which, over the last few decades, has conducted comparative research on the attitudes and behavior of key actors in and around local government, such as chief executives, mayors, councillors, and local state-society relations, in 30 countries in comparative perspective (e.g., The European Mayor; Political Leaders and Changing Local Democracy; Local Councilors).

The Mayors III network is updating their previous work on the European Mayors, published by Palgrave.

The Kick-off meeting of the Mayors III project was held November 2025 in Darmstadt.
